Hi Guys,


Babies, babies everywhere. My fiancées friends, my friends, ITV. Everyone's on about, having, had, is a grown up version of... Babies. Maybe (baby) its this time in your life where it all starts happening? Maybe theres something in the water that all makes us go breeding mad. Will the weather have an adverse affect on this? Will the heat be off in some relationships or will the longer, colder, boring days snuggled up on the sofa (in front of the TV, so maybe in my case this doesn't help the baby-making process) create more little mouths to feed?  In the case of ITV's new series examining babies, it is a ratings winner but a logistical, sicky pain in the be-nappied bottom. Generally working with kids has its pitfalls, the working hours, the demands on the crew and the small chance of a perfect take all combine for some very creative directing techniques.


Yesterday, Studio1's crew were trying to think of ways, ( and mostly failing) to get a 3 year old girl to look into the camera. They could have just as well told her not to look into the camera as she was looking everywhere but. Last time we had a diminutive diva like that in the Studios was during music video for **** ******(that would be telling!)


We wish them all luck in the production, their children's development and most of the crew who received an unwanted crash course in behavioural science.


We move onto other creative ways that directors get the most out of their talent. Drive Productions had an action packed day of stunts, balls catching, high platforms and dancing that really stretched the possibilities in the space and the casts abilities. This happened during one of the rare hot days where we were able to open our big shutter doors to let in some fresh air so the riggers and camera crew could nip out for a cigarette but still be on hand to deal with anything. Studio 1 is best used in this way (weather permitting) and can be used as a great production area for set building, storage, art dept work and much more.

Large shutter is great for deliveries, kit and crew access and is perfect for long, hot shooting days. The crew can nip out for a quick fag during takes and still be part of the action. Shooting in this way has shown some great results

Drives production was for the Olympics. It is to be played on a huge screen for all these lovely new visitors to see in all its glory. Camberwell Studios have been in touch with Film London who have excellent contacts, advice and projects to do with filming in London and for the Olympics. Although Camberwell is not near the Olympic site we have been placed on a list which allows international production companies to book soundproofed studios for all manner of reasons. Studio 1 is also great for athletic video projects as its a large space. Not quite enough for a 100m dash but big enough for the triple jump world record!


The Olympics plus many sporting events have shown some fantastic high speed, slow motion camera work so it was very interesting to see green screen high speed shooting with Chromacode Studios. James, the director, was using a Panasonic AGAF101 and shooting at 50fps. When used with an Adobe After effects plug-in called Twixtor, it gave impressive results. Using Stage Electrics bank of 5KW lamps we filled the space with light and let the performer really test the set-up with lots of fast dance moves.

I singed up for the Camberwell Prize draw with no expectations and I was deeply moved to hear I had won. I was proven wrong about not having any luck at all. During my first visit at the studio I was welcomed by its amazing team and their willingness to help. Opportunities like this don't come often, if at all, so I am very grateful to them all. 

As for the script, I am tiding it up to make it two or three pages max.

The general idea is to make a promo for 4am Films to go on the website, which will have a light tone and will feature some of our past characters (a King, a zombie, a wrestler, a cartoon). The setting will be a lot like a job interview with these people on the look.''

A Fish Called ..... Marilyn

Hi guys,

Last week we told you of the sad demise of our little May. One half of our  pet Goldfish duo along with James. See Blog here for details and reassurance I'm not going mad!). James spent a few sad days on his own, getting lonely and not knowing why (poor memory!) He spent ages in his corner, starring at his fishy reflection spitting, sucking up gravel and then out again in an insane cycle of animal instincts.  We really thought that this would be the end for him and we would have to replace the tank with a bunch of flowers, coffee machine, work desk for Studio 2 clients or something inanimate, simple, low maintenance and boring but ultimately not sad. There was to be a good ending to this story. We purchased a lovely bunch of new fish for James to play with. Now he's the smallest fish in the pond and all this new activity is keeping him on his....flippers, fins, scales, gills etc. Please meet Marilyn (red lips) and the twins. They are completely identical and impossible to tell apart, one darts one way, the other followers in a harmonious union. Like water based, gold medal standard, synchronised swimming!

Others that have used Studio 1 over the past few weeks is an up and coming group called Alt-J. 
From now on Blogs will pay special tribute to bands who have recently used the studio and their work is of excellent merit. Good enough to listen to over and over again as they set-up for repeated takes. Music so good that it sounds good when played through a wall, in reverse, in double time or only half way through. It also has to sound good with random drum sounds as the drummer mimes certain bits then really hits it when theres no other way to hit the drums! 

Alt-J

alt-J (∆)’s name takes a little explaining. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning for the band, as guitarist/bassist Gwil Sainsbury notes, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change,” and the band’s relatively new name came at a turning point in their lives.

Agile Films who were making their video are super duper nice. We cant show any pictures or even discuss what was being filmed (all very hush hush exciting etc) but its safe to say the track sounds great and we wish them luck.

I am a 23-year old Musician/Producer/Videographer from North-West London, my goal with my music has always been to create a unique blend of all the different sounds around me, while most importantly telling a story. I try to include all types of music, from the Early sounds of Soul/Motown and Rock, to modern Hip Hop, Grime, Pop, Indie and beyond. I am currently working on a new album entitled 'Stars & The Moon' and hope to shoot a video for one of the tracks on it
Given the importance of visuals with modern music i try to look carefully at the visuals which represent my music, i really hope to do something different, given this opportunity to use Camberwell Studio's will be a great chance to create a special piece to accompany some of my latest music and I am really looking forward to it!

To a fish tank in the sky

Hi,


I entered work a few weeks ago to find 'Top Gear's James May trying to get his motorbike (see pic below) through our corridor. Quite a surreal start to the day. This was to be one of many random additives to the scientific formula for the new series of  'James May's, Things you need to know' Series 2, which was shot using our Studio 2 again. Readers of the blogs will remember last year that we adopted one of the 1st series's props, in the form of 2 goldfish. One we named James, and the other? Unsurprisingly, was called May. (We hoped May was a girl and tested several scientific contributors on the exact sex of the fish. I think that on these particular shoots the contributors were astrophysicists and brain surgeons rather than marine biologists so their guess was as good as ours!) 

James was re-united with the name-sakes fish who bore no resequence to Mr May whatsoever. I wait with baited (excuse the pun) breath for the new series as the first series  taught me a lot about science and comes highly recommended by Camberwell Studios. Coming soon to BBC 2.
  
Obfishuary:
At the time of going to digital press we have sad news for you. May, the goldfish mentioned above, died on Sunday 3rd June 2012. Please see her previous blog here for some key moments in her life and see the poem below for a summary. 



My dear sweet fish has gone away
He said, "I'm sorry friend, but I can't stay.
"You may be sad and you may cry,
"But all that's born one day must die.
"For though I've gone to that Tank Above
"I'll remember always that you gave me love."

Beto (for short) is still finalising his project. Beto has been very busy so he's been working hard getting all his elements together. The prize is designed to give creative talents a chance to build their portfolios and in the case of the previous winner Neil Genower, It has been very difficult to tie down Neil as he's is very busy with bookings. So on the one hand he has lots of work on his plate already, which is great, but it also means we may have to give the prize away as Neil simply has no time to organise everything. We are waiting on his final date to shoot. Stay tuned because it could be very special if he finds the time!

Sarah Bick, from the March draw is furiously editing away somewhere but has sent the below action shot as a taster. This is what she had to say about here piece and I shall try not to give it all away: 



'I've been thinking that the best format to make the most of the studio day, is to make a test commercial, responding to an online brief. I love adverts, and wanted a project to try more compositing and animation ideas, so really looking forward to this. The technique will be heavy on editing, but I can film all of the material quite swiftly with greeenscreen.
A feel-good 30 second film, documentary camera-style, and a fantasy composited end.'

Sarah was making a Cola commercial where someone enters into a bottle of coke for a big party full of balloon sized bubbles, air hostess style cola girls, tracking markers and funny hats. I can't wait to see the finished article. Sarah and the whole team were really really lovely and we wish them all luck, especially the caffeine addict who shall remain nameless. Chances are she is still shaking. You know who you are!

The previous winner, Sarah Bick, has booked some time to come in and use our studio 1 for a video and plans to use the project to build on her portfolio.

Aprils winner, Beto is going to visit the studio to discuss what project has has in mind. Sarah Bick the previous winner in March is very nearly ready to come in an use the space.

The Free Studio Day we offer has led to some very interesting ideas from parties. Some have never ever made a film, some are old hats and have never had full creative control over their shoots and would love the opportunity to make something new and different. Most have worked mainly in corporate video and have not had the time to dream and realise their visions so we hope the prize draw winners can make a piece that they can really be proud of, and not just happy it's been signed off!


Best to explain the title now. Michael Johnson, Olympic Medallist, world record holder (until Usain Bolt beat it!) shot a video in Studio 2 for and Olympic project. There is not much to say about it, very polite, very efficient. I was going to start with a pun or one-liner but ll leave to Tim Vine to that! (see below). 


'I continually asked the track coach about joining the team but he just kept giving me the run-around.'

The Studio welcomed, a much slower off the sprinting blocks, Ian Poitier and his friend and client, Per, who runs and teaches for a company called Hollywood Camera-work. 
 Ian and Per had a students with a range of film and non-film based expertise visit our Studio 1 to understand and learn about motion tracking, placing tracking markers and every step in between. Using our chromakey green paint with 1 part black to 30 parts green will give you a good key-able colour to paint tape for adding tracking markers to the wall. The seminar by Hollywood Camera-work guys was invaluable training for anyone delving into green screen for the first time and experienced pro's who want a try at some new technology.

We also welcomed Jenya to Studio 2. Jenya was making a surprise video for her fathers birthday to be shown in  her home town in Ukraine. Jenya was holding up boards with Russian text (similar to the link below from' Love Actually')  to show on a big screen at her old man's bash.

This was combined with her brothers rap video and their Grandmothers music video! We wish her Dad a very happy birthday indeed!


What a busy week I think you'll agree and as I sit here awaiting Studio 2 to finish for the day (we are flexible with wrap times unless its the  next European Cup and England are playing in which case they have to finish on time!) I am sitting here thinking of one-liners to come up with the next section this trusted blog. We also welcomed Tim Vine to the studio to shoot some sketches for a video. Tim came, he saw, he took his trousers off, put them back on again, ate us out of bacon sandwiches, walked in a puddle and generally made us laugh all day with his requests. What a thoroughly amiable, nice and funny gentlemen and we wish him luck.

Who's been watching Britain's Got Talent? Not me. I have a life (I was visiting my Mother, alphabetising my CD collection, washing my hair and sleeping, all are more exciting than BGT) Nevertheless the show last year, for me, was brightened up by the inclusion of a group of young lads by the name of New Bounce who got to the semi-final of ITV's flagship show last year.

 They came in to shoot a video in Studio 1 and If I do say myself there was one of the band who stood out for his resemblance to a young Michael Jackson and he certainly had the moves and voice too. We wish them, their Mums (they'll hate me for saying that!) and the agent all the best luck.

Hi Prize winners and readers of  all of our Blogs,


Last weeks blog detailed Sarah's plans for her January prize win (see here for her blog/bio/prize details) 
Sarah has completed her shoot and is now editing. Sarah came in for a pre-production meeting, discussed the storyboard, style, tech elements and logistics ready for her shoot the following week. 
This process gave us a great insight into the challenges of planning the shoot and It also gave us some good ideas for the February winners project too. 


Sarah decided to use her Free Studio Day Prize as an opportunity to make a music video far a song called 'Reaction' for an artist. Roberta's  Facebook page can be seen here:

Sarah used studio 1 and shot in monochrome and had a big emphasis on shadows and light in high contrasts.
Using 2x 2kw Fresnel's we managed to created angular lines and depth to the space in Studio 1.  When we added our smoke machine it gave the room more dimensions and levels for the dancer to move in. 
The whole crew got creative with flashing images, back lights, moving lights which is all part of the prize. See kit available to the winners, and all potential clients, here.

Dancer: Alize Biannic. Alize has skills in contemporary dance, ballet and other art forms.

This was our 1st prize winners shoot and Sarah and her team were really lovely and we hope that this prize, along with the other winners shoots, give them a piece of work to be proud of and raise their profile as film-makers. Sarah was a great director who had a clear vision, flexible work ethic and an extremely creative eye and we all wish her the best of luck. We are sure Sarah was thankful as she made us a beautiful Camberwell Studios logo out of broken mirrors and tiles. It will take pride of place in our lobby area for all to view! See below:

Neil Genower, who visited the studio to claim his prize.

Neil claiming his prize. He was happy to win!, just caught in him in the wrong moment in time. Think its when I told him that the January winner made us a present!!!!!!  ; )

 Neil has been a photographer for years and has since turned his hands and his DSLR lens to shooting videos. He mentioned he has been in the business for years and winning this prize will be the 1st time he has created his own piece and relished the opportunity to use the space as he saw fit. We talked about what elements the prize included. We offer the winner a Studio 1 or 2, pre-lit to requirements, camera/operator, sound capture, dolly/track, mini-jib and a studio assistant to help them get the most out their day. Neil has a few ideas, one is a music video, the other may well be a silent movie involving a round table poker game. The film will show the detailed expressions of the players, subtle body languages and tells. All sounds very exciting and the next blog will reveal all.  

March's winner has also been announced!!!!

Sarah is a Production Designer & Filmmaker, working across the creative industries. With a background in film, events and art direction, she currently works in the art department of feature films. Recent commissions include corporate film direction for Chemistry Group, high street re-gen design with the Architecture Foundation, and music video direction featured on NME. Her moving image work often uses miniatures and compositing, and she writes and makes visuals exploring the cinematic. Sarah studied Theatre Design and Film at University of Arts, London.

Also this week we have been looking into buying the new Canon C300 and have received some very mixed reviews. Maybe it is in the teething stage of its development. Hopefully after a few more shoots with feedback we can comment further. There was a problem with the lack of a 10bit output but this seems to be a rare request.

(Looks great!)

Positive comments include:

- Increased light sensitivity
- EF lenses on a proper camcorder, without the need of expensive adapters
- 4:2:2 50MBit codec
- Proper batteries (they last FOREVER, we got almost 5 hours out of one of the big ones
- No aliasing or moiré

The Canon C300 with an EF mount was used for the last weekends music video shoot involving a beautiful old Volvo. 

Using back projection, snow, wind, water and bright sunlight they chartered the journey of a newly married couple in their 1^st drive into their new life. Wrought with danger perhaps? Well, maybe not so as after the logistics of cleaning up the snow and water they had run out of time for the danger element in the story. Maybe all is well for the new couple? Stay tuned for final edit.

We also welcomed Disney who were shooting a sting for a new project called Karate Party involving some pretty impressive Kung Fu fighting. Sadly the Karate experts hapless victims were a bunch of Easter eggs (an Easter promo) There was not even any for the crew! The Karate expert gleefully smashed through chocolate eggs in slow motion which looked amazing. If you have kids and are up at with them to watch TV then tune in!
